Appliance Repair Costs in Canada
Published Canadian data puts a standard appliance repair at roughly $100 to $300, with a service call fee around $85 on top. Common fridge repairs run $150 to $400, washers $150 to $320 and dishwashers $120 to $280.

Appliance repair pricing is really two decisions stacked together: what the technician charges to diagnose the problem, and whether the fix is worth doing on that appliance at that age. The figures below cover the first part. The sections after the table help with the second.
Every figure comes from a published Canadian source, named beside each row and linked at the bottom. What you actually pay depends on the brand, the part, and whether your appliance is a common model with parts on the truck or something that has to be ordered in.

What actually drives an appliance repair bill
The part decides most of it. A washer lid switch or a dryer thermal fuse is a cheap part and an hour of labour. A fridge compressor or a control board on a European dishwasher can cost more than the appliance is worth, and a good technician will tell you that before they start.
Brand matters more than people expect. Common North American brands have parts in every supplier's warehouse, often on the technician's truck. Premium and imported brands can mean a part ordered from out of province, a second visit, and another week without the appliance.
Access adds time. A stacked laundry pair in a closet, a built-in fridge that has to come out of cabinetry, or a dishwasher with a floor that can't get wet all turn a one-hour job into two.
- Which part failed and what it costs
- Brand and model, and whether parts are stocked locally
- Age of the appliance, since older models lose parts support
- Access: built-in, stacked or tight installations
- Whether the repair is covered by any remaining warranty
- A second visit if a part has to be ordered
Repair or replace
The working rule most technicians use is the fifty percent rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance, and the appliance is past half its expected life, replacement usually wins. A $400 repair on a four-year-old fridge is money well spent. The same repair on a twelve-year-old fridge is a down payment on the next failure.
Published life expectancies vary, but fridges and washing machines commonly run ten to thirteen years, dryers slightly longer, and dishwashers around nine to ten. If yours is near the end of that window and needs an expensive part, get the replacement price before you approve the repair.
The exception is quality. A well-built older appliance can be worth repairing past the rule, because its modern replacement may not be built the same way. Ask the technician directly whether they would repair it if it were theirs.
How the service call fee works
Almost every appliance company in Canada charges a fee just to come out and diagnose, typically around $85 before tax in published Ontario data. That fee covers the travel and the diagnostic time, and most companies credit it against the repair if you approve the work.
Ask two questions when you book: whether the fee is credited if you go ahead, and whether you still owe it if the technician's advice is to replace rather than repair. On that second point, expect to pay it — the diagnosis is the service, even when the answer is not the one you wanted.
What a fair repair quote should itemize
Appliance repairs are usually quoted flat once the diagnosis is done, which makes them easy to compare if the quote is written properly.
- The failed part, by name and part number where relevant
- Part price and labour shown separately
- Whether the service call fee is credited against the total
- Warranty on the repair: parts and labour, and for how long
- What happens if the repair does not fix the problem
- Whether the quoted price includes a return visit if a part must be ordered
Warranty and when to use it
Check for coverage before you call anyone. Manufacturer warranties typically run one year, but extended warranties, credit card purchase protection and home warranty plans all cover appliances in different ways. A repair done by an unauthorized company can void remaining coverage.
If the appliance is under warranty, start with the manufacturer or the retailer, not an independent technician. If it is out of warranty, an independent local technician is usually the faster and cheaper route for common brands.
Common questions
Published Canadian data puts a standard repair at roughly $100 to $300 plus the service call fee. Common ranges: fridges $150 to $400, washers $150 to $320, dishwashers $120 to $280, dryers $100 to $400. Sealed-system fridge work can reach $1,000.
Usually yes. The fee covers the diagnosis itself, which is the service you received even if you decline the repair. Most companies credit it toward the job if you approve the work.
Apply the fifty percent rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable replacement and the appliance is past half its expected life, replacement usually makes more sense. For fridges and washers, that life is roughly ten to thirteen years.
Parts availability. Common North American brands have cheap, stocked parts. Premium and imported brands often need parts ordered in, which adds cost and a second visit.
